    Predictions for Basketball 09'

Appy has all returning players except for Marvin Fetchner. But he is replaced by Mladen, a 6'8 German foriegn exchange student, who also plays football this year. The kicker for Appy is also planning to play this year. My predictions for Appy is for them to go as far last year and farther. They went to State Quarter-Finals last year but lost to Eastern Montgomery.

Gonna be a battle between Appy and PV for the LPD crown.

Mladen is a physical player. that being said, he will get into foul trouble a lot. if he isn't in, appy won't have a post presence at all.

Appy wouln't have a post presence at all if they didn't import (recruit) players. PV has 3 over 6'5" homegrown.

    Re: Predictions for Basketball 09'

Looking forward to the start of the season. Pre-season / scrimmages are just a few weeks away.

    In the LPD...

Appalachia looks to be the team to beat again this year. Appy could go farther in the post-season this year, but their biggest obstacle, like last year, will be depth in the roster.

Powell Valley should return a good team this year. Losing Jordan Martin to graduation will be a big loss for the Vikings, but they return one of the top three players in the district in Garrison. I wouldn't be surprised at all if the Vikings split the games with Appy in 09 as they did last year.

JI Burton hasn't lost as many players to graduation, but Jacob Coleman was the strength of their program last year. They return another of the district's best players in Deaton. JIB could have some players move up from a JV team that won the district championship last year. The biggest change for JIB will be Williams replacing Stan Wilson as coach.

JJK lost most of their starters to graduation but return Clark and Dutton. It will be interesting to see if McAmis can pull together a good team

Clintwood lost Kendrick and Pound lost Bolling to graduation, but either team could shake up the LPD on any given night.

If I were ranking, I'd probably have to pick the top three teams in the LPD as
    1. Appalachia
    2. Powell Valley
    3. JIB

    In the Cumberland...

Castlewood returns a very good group from a championship team last year and could repeat again this year. Twin Springs always puts together a good team and could challenge for the district championship. Early predictions for the CD are something like...
    1. Castlewood
    2. Twin Springs
    3. St. Paul

    In the CMD...
Haven't heard a lot coming from the CMD this year, other than Gate City has a transfer who is very good. The Devils appear to be putting together another good team. But, how often does GC not have a good basketball team? It will be interesting to see how things develop in the district.

    In the BDD...
Haven't heard much about the BDD teams either, but I would expect Twin Valley to put together a good team and make their way back to the Region D tournament.

That would be a big loss for Norton over the next couple years.

I know his dad lives in Kentucky, so that's possible. He was at one of Burton's recent football games. So I'm not sure.

Other than Deaton, I think Norton would have Goins, Large, and Hunnicutt returning if they're playing this year.

I think the transition from Stan Wilson to Aaron Williams as a coach won't be easy. But, Williams is a good coach.

    Re: Predictions for Basketball 09'

I've been hearing a lot about him, and I'm anxious to see him play. GC opens up their regular season against JIB on Dec 11 and will be at JJK on Dec 14.

I was at a game last year when the JV team was playing, and I was talking to some folks at halftime about how impressive the JV team was. Someone commented that they thought GC's JV team last year would have beaten several of our varsity teams in the LPD. And, I couldn't disagree. There was some very good talent at that level. If the kids develop at the varsity level, it could be good news for the Blue Devils. I'm thinking that GC has a kid in about the 8th or 9th grade who is related to the great Stacy Ervin.
